Blooming Missions!

Welcome to our new "Blooming Missions" page for Velda Rose UMC. We are a congregation actively involved and working on ways to Help the Love of God bloom in you! And, as such, we believe that our job as Christian disciples is to transform the world through our efforts and service as we attempt to spread God's love to the best of our ability. There are a lot of different things going on, and we hope you can get a picture of them here, and how you might join in! We have mission projects that are ongoing, and some that are seasonal. We believe God's mission is meant to be "both-and"...BOTH for those closest to us in our neighborhoods, families and communities...AND in the wider world. Different people feel different callings and passions to meet the needs of God's people near and far. The left column will highlight Velda Rose's primary and ongoing outreach programs: our Food Pantry and our Rummage Sale. The right column will highlight the varieties of projects and collections we have going on at any given time. This center column will be updates, reflections, photos, etc. on how our missions at Velda Rose are "blooming" God's love in our world!

VELDA ROSE FOOD PANTRY

Open 9-11am, Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays, located on the west side of the patio. Applicants must be Mesa residents, and have a photo ID. Food boxes are made available these days to eligible applicants, and can be repeated every 60 days. Non- perishable food donations may be made by bringing food into the church office during office hours; to the Food Pantry directly during its hours, and food donations may be placed in the shopping carts near the doors on Sunday mornings.

Items particularly needed: peanut butter(small jars), jelly (small jars), cereal, spagehetti pasta (box), soda crackers, rice, soup, green beans, boxed meals, pinto/kidney beans, Pasta Roni, Hamburger Helper, canned chicken/beef, water.

RUMMAGE!

DATES OF NEXT SALE: OCT. 24,25,26, 2013! 7am - 3pm

At Velda Rose, we can't talk about mission without talking about RUMMAGE! Many in the congregation and neighborhood, as well as specifically the United Methodist Women, focus efforts throughout the year in collecting, sorting, preparing for, organizing, recruiting and shopping at our two annual Rummage Sales in February and October. In 2011, we completed a 80,000 sq ft building to house our rummage efforts. While, in the next few years, we will be paying off our new building, it is the intent that the Rummage Sales will resume being a primary source of revenue for the wide and varied mission efforts of the United Methodist Women. It also serves as an outreach ministry, providing all manner of good quality household supplies, clothing, equipment, books...whatever you can imagine, at rock-bottom rummage prices to our neighborhood.

Donations can be brought to the Rummage Building 9am-noon, Mon-Fridays, or left in the breezeway (by the sanctuary entrance) on Sun. mornings.

Volunteering: can be arranged by calling the church office or talk to Tish Roberts.

OUR CURRENT MISSION EFFORTS:

IMAGINE NO MALARIA
So far, we've raised over $10,000 for this world-wide cause! That's 1000 lives we've saved. You can still donate to Imagine No Malaria by earmarking a check for that purpose in the offering plate on Sunday, or set up donations online through our Desert Southwest Conference UMC

UMOM

We serve meals the 3rd Tuesday of each month, Oct. thru April at the United Methodist Outreach Ministries - a family shelter in downtown Phoenix that helps families get back on their feet. Serving 75 – 250 people a month. During the summer months of May thru Sept. the congregation sends $200 a month to cover the cost of food for the summer months.

Christmas Giving

We helped 25 Foster Kids, 27 Angel Tree Kids, Maricopa County Hospital, and Child Crisis Center with Christmas gifts.

- Heifer International - Christmas cards total $210

- The total for UMOM Christmas Cards giving was $715.

Global Missions

Our missionaries each received $3,000 as part of our Global Ministries Partnership. Velda Rose extended to contact for another 3 years for Terry and Muriel Henderson ("Give Ye Them To Eat” Mexico missionaries), and David and Lori Persons(Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mulungwishi missionaries).

School Supplies Drive

The schools we are supporting are Sousa Elementary, Taft Elementary, Stevenson Elementary, and Jefferson Elementary, all in Mesa. We timed our drive with the school supplies sales. The congregation donates a large pile of school supplies to each school in the middle of August and early April. The schools appreciated all the donations. Missions and UMW are starting this project again in July 2012 for the new school year.

Habitat for Humanity

- We have supported with money and labor the work on a house each spring the last two years. Houses have been built in Apache Junction and in Mesa.

Toothbrushes and Toothpaste

We have sent toothbrush and paste set to Agua Prieta Health Center in Mexico, and sets to Wesley Health Center. We are currently working on saving 20 sets for each schools, to be delivered with the school supplies. The congregation has given enough toothbrushes and toothpaste to reach out to four groups. They’ve been given to UMOM, Wesley Health Center, Agua Prieta Health Center. When you go the Dentist for your cleaning don’t forget to ask for that extra toothbrush and toothpaste for Missions, this allows us to reach out to others in need.
